The brand: In 1977, the French army adopted the FAMAS (Fusil d'Assaut de la Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Étienne), replacing the various weapons already in service (the MAS 49/56, the MAT 49 machine pistol and the MAC 24/29 machine gun).
