What is an alarm gun?

An alarm pistol is a non-lethal weapon that emits a sound similar to that of a real firearm, scaring off intruders or assailants.

These blank weapons can also be loaded with pepper or CS gas ammunition, making it possible to neutralise or disorientate an assailant without killing him, leaving time to flee and alert the police. This type of alarm weapon can also project non-lethal flares or rubber projectiles using an adaptor.

Why opt for a blank weapon such as an alarm pistol?

A blank gun is a highly effective way of preventing intruders from breaking into your home or scaring off an attacker. It produces a very loud bang, which has a frightening and dissuasive effect. A cartridge case is even ejected from the gun after firing, for even more realism.

So the alarm gun makes you feel safer in your home, while avoiding the risks associated with a real weapon. You can easily scare off an intruder without risking injury to yourself or anyone else.

The different types of alarm pistols and their specific features

There are two main types of alarm pistols:

  • Top-firing alarm guns
  • Front-firing alarm guns

Top-firing alarm guns represent the most basic models. These alarm pistols can be distinguished by the manner in which the gas is released from the top of the gun after firing, as opposed to the end of the barrel like front firing models (hence the name assigned to each alarm pistol). Top-firing models can only fire blank ammunition. As a result, their use is solely for creating noise to deter an attacker.

Front-firing alarm pistols are the preferred choice for individuals looking for a defensive weapon. Front-firing models, similar to actual firearms, discharge gas from the barrel's end, effectively deterring intruders or attackers who often mistake them for real guns. Different types of ammunition are used in front-firing alarm pistols:

  • Conventional blank bullets
  • CS (tear gas) or pepper gas cartridges
  • A flare adapter can also be fitted.

Tips to consider when buying your first alarm pistol.

Pay attention to the legislation governing the possession of an alarm pistol

Under French law, an alarm pistol is considered a category D weapon. This category covers all compressed air or CO2 weapons used for leisure or defensive shooting, with a power limit of 20 joules. Like all category D firearms, the alarm pistol is freely available to anyone over the age of 18, and does not need to be declared to the prefecture.

However, if you decide to add a projectile-launching adaptor (except for rockets) to your alarm pistol, it will be classed as a category C weapon (which includes compressed air weapons with a power of over 20 joules). To comply with the law, you must then register your alarm pistol with the prefecture.

Legislation governing the possession of an alarm pistol may vary from one European country to another. It is advisable to research the existing laws in your country before buying your first alarm pistol to confirm that you are legally allowed to own one.

When you buy your first alarm pistol, make sure you also buy a suitable case in which to carry it.

It is against the law in France to freely carry around an alarm pistol. Only the police can determine whether you are entitled to own one. Without exception, your alarm pistol must be locked with a security device and kept in a closed case or cabinet. At Wicked Store, you'll find suitable carrying cases that will enable you to comply with the safety requirements when transporting your alarm pistol.

Is it legal to have a blank gun?

Alarm pistols are considered to be category D weapons. They can therefore be purchased over the counter and are perfectly legal, provided you are over 18. What's more, possession of a blank firearm is not subject to registration with the local authorities.

However, its use must be restricted to the private sphere, i.e. the protection of your home. Use in public is prohibited.

This information relates to French law; it is your responsibility to check the laws applicable in your country before buying.
